Reasons for choosing [home care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home) (also called [domiciliary care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home)) can vary. For example, sometimes, after a [stay in the hospital](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/condition-led-care/-postoperative-care), someone might find they need some help while recuperating. Others can find that a [long-term condition or disability](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/condition-led-care) means they need some help at home. You or those close to you might notice changes in abilities to manage the day-to-day things like [preparing meals](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/meal-preparation) or [personal care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/personal-care).

### Is Home Care regulated?

Yes. In England, home care agencies that provide [personal care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/personal-care) must be registered with and regulated by the [Care Quality Commission (CQC)](https://www.cqc.org.uk/). In Wales, home care agencies that provide [personal care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/personal-care) must be registered with and regulated by the [Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW)](https://www.careinspectorate.wales/). For Scotland, home care agencies that provide [personal care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/personal-care) must be registered with and regulated by the [Care Inspectorate (CI)](https://www.careinspectorate.com/).  [Personal care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/personal-care) includes things like help with washing, dressing, toileting, and [assisting with medications](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home/medication-management) — anything that involves direct physical care or support with hygiene.

[Home care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home) (also called [domiciliary care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home)) can be paid for privately or can be funded in full or in part by your local council. ### What is a Personal Assistant & should I hire one?

A personal assistant (PA) is someone employed directly by your (or your loved one) to provide care or support. The person employing the PA becomes a legal employer and has legal responsibilities (e.g. payroll, insurance, employment rights). Many people use Direct Payments from their local authority, personal budgets, or their own money to employ a PA. A PA is not regulated by the CQC even if they are providing personal care. For a stress free care journey we would recommend you engage with a regulated [home care](https://www.thegoodplace.care/care-in-your-own-home) provider, where they have all of the employer responsibilities.

### What is Home Care?

For many people, it is vital to stay independent and at home in their own familiar surroundings near friends and family.
