How can home carers help with dignity during colostomy care?
Protecting dignity is at the heart of how we support colostomy care. That means always asking permission, explaining each step, and keeping the person covered as much as possible with towels or clothing. We work in a calm, unhurried way, never rushing someone when they feel self-conscious. Where possible, we encourage involvement in tasks, such as handing over supplies or doing parts of the routine themselves, so they feel in control. Our carers also understand the importance of privacy: doors closed, interruptions avoided, and conversations kept respectful and confidential.
