Looking after yourself is not stepping away from care; it is what helps you continue providing it. Guilt is very common, especially when someone is nearing the end of life, but exhaustion can leave you less patient, less clear-headed, and less able to respond kindly. Protecting your wellbeing might mean arranging a full night’s sleep, taking a short walk, eating regularly, or saying yes to outside help. It can also mean talking honestly to someone about fear, grief, or anger rather than carrying it alone. Small breaks and shared care are not selfish. They help you remain emotionally available and physically capable. In many cases, the best thing you can do for your loved one is to make sure you are supported too.
