People cope in different ways. Some want to talk openly; others prefer to focus on everyday topics or avoid the subject entirely. It’s important to respect their pace. You can offer gentle openings, such as asking what’s most important to them right now, or what brings comfort on difficult days, without pushing for big conversations. Our carers are used to navigating this sensitively, following the person’s lead. Sometimes, simply being present—sharing a cup of tea, playing music, watching TV—is enough. If you’re struggling with unspoken feelings, we can listen to you separately, and signpost to emotional support or counselling services if you’d find that helpful.
