How can I support someone with bowel cancer emotionally?
Emotional support often starts with listening without rushing to fix everything. Encourage your loved one to talk about fears or frustrations, and accept that they may have good days and bad days. Offer reassurance that they remain valued and loved, regardless of bowel problems or appearance changes. Keeping small pleasures in their routine – favourite TV shows, music, hobbies or visits – can lift mood. If conversations feel difficult, carers can gently facilitate, or simply be present as an extra, calm person in the room during challenging moments.
