A well-positioned catheter should not be constantly painful, but some people feel mild discomfort, awareness or occasional bladder spasms. At the beginning, it can feel strange and people often worry that every twinge means something is wrong. Over time, most learn what feels normal for them. Persistent pain, burning, or strong spasms that do not settle should always be checked by a nurse or doctor. Good daily care can help minimise problems – for example, making sure tubing is not pulling, keeping the bag supported, and choosing comfortable clothing. Our carers are gentle and respectful when providing intimate care, taking time to reposition tubing and bags carefully. We also encourage people to describe what they are feeling so we can share this with health professionals if needed.
