What are the signs of infection or complications around a stoma?

Warning signs to watch for include increasing redness, warmth, or swelling around the stoma, broken or weeping skin, and any strong or unpleasant smell that isn’t resolved with a bag change and cleaning. Persistent pain, bleeding from the stoma, changes in its size or shape, or very watery or absent stool can also signal problems. If you notice a bulge suggesting a hernia or if leaks become frequent, contact a stoma nurse or GP promptly.
