Extra advice should be sought if there is pain, repeated leaking, bleeding, significant skin damage, sudden changes in output, swelling, a change in the stoma’s appearance, or anything else that seems unusual or distressing. Emotional changes matter too. If a person becomes very withdrawn, frightened, or unable to manage daily life, that is also a sign that extra support may be needed. Home carers can assist with observation and routine, but they do not replace clinical advice when something appears wrong. Acting early is often the best approach, as small concerns can usually be addressed more easily before they become bigger problems.
