Is end of life care the same as palliative care?

Realistic image of a Black male caregiver in a 00072b tunic with e51974 trim carefully helping a frail elderly Black man to sip water through a straw in bed bedside table with medications and a lamp both maintaining gentle eye contact in a calm tidy bedroom.

They are closely linked but not identical. Palliative care is any support that focuses on quality of life and symptom management for a life-limiting condition, and it can begin months or years before death. End of life care usually refers to the final phase—often the last year, and more specifically the last weeks or days—when death is expected soon. At home, the same team may support both, with care gently shifting from maintaining independence to prioritising comfort. You don’t have to wait until the last days to ask about palliative or end of life support; starting early often leads to a calmer, more planned experience for everyone.
