What tasks can a home carer help with at the end of life?

Realistic image of a Black male caregiver in a 00072b tunic with e51974 trim carefully helping a frail elderly Black man to sip water through a straw in bed bedside table with medications and a lamp both maintaining gentle eye contact in a calm tidy bedroom.

A home carer can support with many everyday tasks that become difficult towards the end of life. This includes gentle washing, bathing, or bed baths, dressing and changing nightwear, toileting and continence care, and safe moving and positioning in bed or a chair. They can help with light meals and drinks if appropriate, prompts or administration of medication as agreed, and monitoring of symptoms. Carers also provide emotional reassurance, sit quietly when company is needed, support family members, and manage basic household chores so the home environment stays calm and comfortable for everyone.
